Best NDA generators in the UK (2026)

Short answer: if both sides still need to agree the words, use a two-sided (that is our job). If you only need a starting Word or PDF file, a free template from Writford, AI Business Kit or the GOV.UK IPO examples is enough. Below we compare those tools with NDASafe, Vordex and Rocket Lawyer UK.

In breve

Pick the job. Two-sided room when the other side will ; a downloaded Word or PDF when you will fill blanks yourself. We list who each tool suits, whether it is free, whether you must sign up, the format, mutual or one-way, and whether both sides edit one link.

Which NDA generator is best in the UK?

Use a two-sided NDA when both sides still need to agree the words. On Contracts.io, Lex drafts from a sentence, you share one link, and both of you edit then . Use a free Word file from Writford, AI Business Kit or the GOV.UK IPO examples when you only need a starting document to fill in.

Paid Word packs such as NDASafe suit specialist variants (employee, investor, M&A). Vordex builds a first draft around the disclosure, purpose, recipients, duration and UK legal system. Rocket Lawyer UK builds from a questionnaire inside a membership. None of those replace a two-sided room once the other side sends a mark-up.

This page is England & Wales first. Scotland and Northern Ireland are separate legal systems; Vordex and NDASafe say they let you pick among those systems. We list only facts taken from each vendor's own pages, checked 28 Oct 2026. If a claim is not on the page, we leave it out.

See NDAs explained, the NDA generator and NDA templates.

What is the difference between a downloaded template and a two-sided NDA?

A template download gives you a Word or PDF file to fill in, email, and chase as "v4_final". A two-sided NDA keeps both parties on one shared version: they propose changes as redlines, Accept, Counter or Decline, then e-sign the same paper. That is the job Contracts.io is built for.

The downloaded file is a first draft in your hands. The other side opens it in Word, turns on Track Changes, and emails a new copy. Three rounds later nobody is sure which file is current. A two-sided room ends that thread: one link, one version history, one frozen signed copy.

GOV.UK's IPO examples, Writford, NDASafe and AI Business Kit all hand you a file. Vordex hands you an editable first draft to approve or negotiate. Rocket Lawyer UK builds the document in its own questionnaire. Contracts.io is the one in this list that puts both sides on the same link with Accept / Counter / Decline.

The NDA is still a contract either way. The difference is how you agree the words.

Which UK NDA tools are free?

Contracts.io has a published Free plan at £0. Writford emails free England & Wales Word NDAs. AI Business Kit's NDA is free. The GOV.UK IPO examples are free ODT and PDF files. NDASafe is paid from £39. Vordex does not state a generator price on its NDA page. Rocket Lawyer UK markets a free NDA inside a membership.

What "free" actually means on each site:

  • Contracts.io. Free £0, then paid plans from £15 a month. See /pricing. The other side never pays and never needs an account.
  • Writford. Free to download and use commercially. No account. You enter a name, work email and organisation; they email an editable .docx.
  • AI Business Kit. The NDA itself is free. Their NDA page says you sign up free with one click, with no card and no email verification, and download Word plus PDF. Other documents on that page are listed at £9, with an HR bundle at £29.
  • GOV.UK Intellectual Property Office. Free example one-way and mutual NDAs, as ODT and PDF, under the Open Government . No sign-up.
  • NDASafe. Not free. A single template is £39; the Core NDA Bundle of eight templates is £99.
  • Vordex. The NDA generator page does not state a price. Their published pricing is for contract review, so we do not treat those figures as the generator's price.
  • Rocket Lawyer UK. The NDA page is titled "MAKE YOUR FREE Non Disclosure Agreement". Completing documents sits inside their membership. Their pricing page was blocked from our fetch, so we do not print a monthly figure.

Free is not the same as two-sided. A free Word file still has to be emailed, edited and signed.

Which tools let both sides edit the same NDA?

Contracts.io does: one share link, redlines, Accept / Counter / Decline, then e-sign. The other tools in this roundup give you a file or a first draft to take away. Writford, NDASafe, AI Business Kit and the GOV.UK IPO examples are downloads. Vordex describes an editable draft for approval or negotiation. Rocket Lawyer UK builds inside its own product.

That split is the whole wedge. If the other side will accept your paper as written, a filled-in Word file is enough. If they will change the purpose, the term, who may see the information, or the exclusions, you need one place where those edits live. Emailing "NDA_v3_JS_edits.docx" is how two people sign different text.

On Contracts.io the guest opens the link free, proposes a change, and signs the same version. See /features and your client redlined your contract.

How do UK NDA generators compare?

Contracts.io is the two-sided option: Lex drafts, both sides edit one link, then e-sign. Writford and AI Business Kit are free UK Word downloads. NDASafe sells Word templates from £39. Vordex generates a first draft around the deal. The GOV.UK IPO examples are official one-way and mutual files. Rocket Lawyer UK builds from a questionnaire.

How do you choose an NDA generator?

Match the tool to the job. If the other side will negotiate, pick a two-sided room. If you need a free file to fill in, pick Writford, AI Business Kit or the GOV.UK IPO examples. If you need a specialist Word variant, pick NDASafe. If you want a guided first draft, look at Vordex.

A working order:

  1. Who is sharing? Mutual if both sides disclose; one-way if only one does. The IPO notes that a one-way NDA may need to be executed as a deed to make it enforceable — do not turn a one-way disclosure into a fake mutual NDA just to avoid a deed. Writford's one-way template carries a consideration recital so it can work as a simple contract.
  2. Will they mark it up? If yes, a downloaded file becomes an email thread. Use a two-sided link.
  3. Which UK legal system? England & Wales is the default on most of these pages. Vordex and NDASafe say you can choose Scotland or Northern Ireland. Rocket Lawyer UK asks whether Scots law or England and Wales should apply if a party is based in Scotland.
  4. Do you need a specialist shape? Employee, investor, freelancer or M&A diligence NDAs are a different paper from a short commercial mutual. NDASafe sells those as separate Word templates. A general generator will not invent employment whistleblowing carve-outs unless you ask for them.
  5. How will you sign? A simple NDA is commonly signed electronically. A deed still needs a witness who is physically present. See /law/england-and-wales.

Start from our NDA generator when you want Lex to draft, the other side to redline, and both of you to sign one version.

Why does two-sided editing beat emailing Word drafts?

Because both parties agree on and edit the contract in one shared place. The purpose, exclusions, term and who may see the information stay on one version. Nobody signs v4_final while the other side signed v4_final_JS. That is our core job.

A typical Word thread looks like this: you fill the IPO or Writford blanks, email a .docx, they return a PDF of their paper, you copy clauses into a new file, and someone prints the wrong one. Each hop creates a new original. Two-sided editing keeps one original: every redline sits on the same page, every version is kept, and the signed copy is the one you both saw.

Lex drafts from a sentence ("a with a studio we are pitching next week"). You edit. The other side opens the link free, with their own private Lex you cannot see. Accept, Counter or Decline. Then both of you e-sign one frozen version. The guest never pays.

That does not make a badly scoped NDA good. It does mean the words you both signed are the words you both edited. See /features and how to write a contract.

Should you use a mutual or a one-way NDA?

Use a mutual NDA when both sides will share . Use a when only one side discloses. Partnership talks, agency pitches and joint projects are usually mutual. A founder pitching an investor, or a company briefing a supplier, is usually one-way. Match the paper to the information flow.

The IPO puts it the same way: one-way if only you are disclosing, mutual if both parties are. It also says that if the NDA is one-way only, it may need to be executed as a to make it enforceable, and that you should not make what should be a one-way agreement into an artificial mutual agreement.

A mutual NDA is often easier to get signed, because the terms bind both sides equally. Where only one side will realistically share anything, a one-way NDA is shorter and clearer. Lex will draft either if you say so in the sentence. NDAs explained walks through definition, exclusions, duration and who may see the information.

Are electronic signatures enough for a UK NDA?

Yes, for a simple NDA. In England and Wales an electronic signature is admissible in evidence, and the Law Commission concluded it is capable in law of executing a document where the signer intends to authenticate it and any formalities are met. A deed still needs a witness who is physically present. Most commercial NDAs are simple contracts, not deeds.

The Electronic Communications Act 2000, s.7, makes electronic signatures admissible. The IPO's example one-way NDA is set out to be signed and delivered as a deed, with a witness block, because a one-way promise can lack . A mutual NDA usually has consideration each way: each side's promise of confidence.

On Contracts.io both sides e-sign one frozen version. See /law/england-and-wales, the e-signature page, and does an NDA need a wet-ink signature.

What is the best free NDA generator in the UK?

For a free file: Writford (Word, no account), AI Business Kit (Word plus PDF, one-click sign-up) or the GOV.UK IPO examples (ODT and PDF, no sign-up). For a free two-sided NDA that both sides edit and e-sign on one link, use Contracts.io's Free plan.

Does the other side need an account on Contracts.io?

No. They open the link you share, propose changes and sign. They never pay and never make an account.

Is a GOV.UK IPO example NDA enough?

It is a solid official starting point: short example one-way and mutual NDAs under English law. You still fill the purpose, the term and the parties, and you still need both sides to sign the same version. The IPO says a one-way NDA may need to be executed as a deed.

Can I use a free Word NDA commercially?

Writford says yes: download it, fill it in and use it in your business. It is a drafting aid. You still adapt the blanks and agree the final words with the other side.

Mutual or one-way — which should I pick?

Mutual if both of you will share confidential information. One-way if only one side discloses. Do not dress a one-way disclosure up as mutual just to avoid signing a deed.

Does a one-way NDA need to be a deed?

The IPO says a one-way NDA may need to be executed as a deed to make it enforceable. A deed needs a witness who is physically present. A mutual NDA usually has consideration each way and is commonly a simple contract.
