Kurz gesagt
Electronic signatures are valid in England and Wales for most commercial contracts. Pick an e-sign tool on envelope limits, SES/AES/QES and price. Use a two-sided contract room when the back-and-forth is still about the words. We list free plans and starting prices only where we could verify them.
Which e-signature tool is best for UK small businesses?
If the document is already agreed, pick an e-signature product on price, envelope limits and whether you need SES, AES or QES. DocuSign, Adobe Acrobat Sign, Dropbox Sign, PandaDoc, SignNow, Yousign and Zoho Sign all collect signatures on a file you already have. If the words are not agreed, use a two-sided room first, then sign.
A UK small business that still emails v4_final.docx does not have an e-signature problem. It has a negotiation problem. Collecting a signature on the wrong version is how two people bind themselves to different text. Agree the paper, freeze it, then sign it.
We list only prices and free-plan claims we could read on the vendor's own pages on 28 Oct 2026. GBP where the vendor shows GBP; otherwise the currency on the page. Are electronic signatures legally valid in England and Wales?
Yes. The Electronic Communications Act 2000, s.7, makes electronic signatures admissible in evidence. UK eIDAS — retained Regulation (EU) 910/2014 — recognises simple, advanced and qualified electronic signatures. The Law Commission's 2019 report Electronic execution of documents confirmed that an electronic signature can execute a document where the signer intends to authenticate it and formalities are met.
Section 7 of the Electronic Communications Act 2000 is the evidence rule: an electronic signature is admissible on any question about the authenticity or integrity of a communication or data. It can be put before a court like any other evidence of who signed.
UK eIDAS is Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 as retained in UK law. It sets three levels: a simple electronic signature (SES), an advanced electronic signature (AES) and a qualified electronic signature (QES). The Law Commission report Electronic execution of documents (4 September 2019) is the authoritative restatement: an electronic signature is capable in law of executing a document, including a DeedEine Deed ist ein förmliches schriftliches Dokument, das besondere Unterzeichnungsvorschriften erfüllt und üblicherweise verwendet wird, wenn eine Seite nichts im Gegenzug erhält.Mehr im Glossar, where the signer intends to authenticate it and any formalities are met. When do you still need wet ink or a witness?
A deed still needs a witness who is physically present, even when the signature is electronic. Some registrable land dispositions follow HM Land Registry's own processes, not a general e-sign upload. A will must be signed in the presence of two witnesses under the Wills Act 1837; wet ink remains the general route.
Deeds. The Law of Property (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1989, s.1(2)–(3), says a deed must make clear on its face that it is intended to be a deed, and is validly executed by an individual only if signed in the presence of a witness who attests the signature, and delivered as a deed. The Law Commission's 2019 report says that witness must be physically present even when the deed is signed electronically. A remote witness on a video call is not what the report describes. See deed.
Wills. Wills Act 1837, s.9 requires a will to be in writing, signed by the testator, with that signature made or acknowledged in the presence of two witnesses present at the same time, who each attest and sign. That is a wet-ink formality. An e-signature product does not execute a will in England and Wales.
Land Registry. Registrable dispositions of registered land follow HM Land Registry's own execution and submission processes. Practice Guide 8 covers execution of deeds. Practice Guide 82 covers electronic signatures the Registry accepts. Uploading a generic signed PDF is not a substitute for those processes.
Most small-business service contracts, freelance agreements and NDAs are simple agreements. They do not need a witness. They do not need wet ink. Freeze the wording, sign electronically, keep the audit trail.
What is the difference between an e-signature tool and a two-sided contract tool?
E-signature tools collect signatures on a document you already have. A two-sided contract tool starts earlier: it drafts the words and lets both sides RedlineEin Redline ist ein vorgeschlagener Änderungsvermerk in einem Vertragsentwurf (hinzugefügte, gestrichene oder umformulierte Wörter), keine unterschriebene Änderung.Mehr im Glossar the same version before anyone signs. That is the wedge that ends the “v4_final.docx” email thread. Signing is the last step, not the whole job.
DocuSign, Adobe Acrobat Sign, Dropbox Sign, SignNow, Yousign and Zoho Sign are built around a file you upload or a template you prepare. PandaDoc adds document creation — proposals, quotes, an editor — then send, track and e-sign. None of those pages describe both parties drafting clauses on one paper with Accept / Counter / Decline.
On Contracts.io, Lex drafts from one sentence. You share one link. The other side redlines, with their own private Lex. When the words are agreed, both of you e-sign one frozen version. The guest never pays. If a GegenparteiDie Gegenpartei ist die andere Seite des Vertrags: die Person oder das Unternehmen, mit dem Sie das Geschäft schließen.Mehr im Glossar will only sign in DocuSign, finish the negotiation on the shared link, then send the frozen file. Do UK small businesses need qualified electronic signatures?
Usually no. A simple electronic signature is enough for most commercial contracts in England and Wales. Advanced and qualified signatures add identity assurance under UK eIDAS. QES is the highest level and is what some EU processes and some vendors sell as an add-on. Match the level to the document, not to the brand.
SES — simple electronic signature. A typed name, a drawn mark, a click to sign, tied to an audit trail. This is the usual last step on a freelance agreement, an NDA or a statement of work. DocuSign's UK plans page states that eSignature is a valid simple electronic signature under eIDAS, with SES on Personal, Standard and Business Pro.
AES — advanced electronic signature. Uniquely linked to the signer, capable of identifying them, created under their sole control, and linked to the data so later changes are detectable. Several vendors sell AES as an add-on or a higher plan (Yousign/Youtrust on Plus/Pro yearly; Zoho Sign on higher plans; DocuSign on Enhanced).
QES — qualified electronic signature. The highest eIDAS level, created with a qualified certificate from a qualified trust service provider. DocuSign's UK page lists QES as an add-on from £9 per recipient. Yousign/Youtrust lists QES from €10 per signature on Plus/Pro. Zoho Sign lists QES on Enterprise, consuming credits.
A UK small business signing client work does not step up to QES because the brand is famous. It steps up when a particular process — some cross-border filings, some identity-assured workflows — requires that level. For the ordinary services contract, SES on an agreed, frozen document is the usual path.
How much do e-signature plans cost in the UK?
DocuSign's UK Personal plan is £96 billed annually. Yousign (now Youtrust) publishes euro prices from a Free €0 plan. Contracts.io publishes GBP from £0. Adobe Acrobat Sign Solutions is sales-quoted. Zoho Sign's paid figures are geo-rendered and were not in the HTML we could extract, so we write “see vendor site” rather than guess.
The figures we could verify on 28 Oct 2026:
- Contracts.io. Free £0 (3 active contracts); Plus £15/mo; Pro £29/mo; Team £119/mo for 5 seats; Enterprise from £750. See /pricing. The other side never pays.
- DocuSign UK. Personal £96 billed annually, 5 envelopes a month, SES. Business Pro listed at £33 on the UK plans page. Standard GBP was not clearly shown, so we do not invent it. US list prices remain Personal $11 / Standard $30 / Business Pro $45 per month, annual billed monthly.
- Dropbox Sign. Essentials $15 USD/mo; Standard $25 USD/user/mo with a two-user minimum. Free plan: 3 signature requests a month.
- PandaDoc. Free, 5 documents a month. Starter $19/user/mo billed annually ($35 monthly) on the vendor help centre.
- SignNow. Business $8/user/mo billed annually ($20 monthly) on the vendor plans page and help centre. 7-day trial.
- Yousign / Youtrust. Free €0; One €9/mo excl. VAT; Plus €23/user/mo; Pro €38/user/mo.
- Adobe Acrobat Sign. Sign Solutions: contact sales. Acrobat Pro for teams includes e-sign; the listed sterling figure was not in the HTML we fetched.
- Zoho Sign. Free plan yes (5 envelopes/user/month). Paid list prices: see vendor site.
Envelope caps matter as much as the monthly fee. Personal DocuSign is 5 envelopes a month. Dropbox Sign paid plans advertise unlimited signature requests. Contracts.io is not envelope-metered that way: Free is 3 active contracts.
If a client already requires DocuSign, send the finished file there. If they are still arguing scope, do that on one shared link first. See is DocuSign worth it for freelancers.

Häufig gestellte Fragen
Are e-signatures legally binding in the UK?
Yes, in England and Wales, for most contracts. The Electronic Communications Act 2000, s.7, makes them admissible in evidence. UK eIDAS recognises SES, AES and QES. The Law Commission confirmed in 2019 that an electronic signature can execute a document where the signer intends to authenticate it and formalities are met.
Can a deed be signed electronically?
Yes, with a witness who is physically present. The Law Commission's 2019 report says an electronic signature can execute a deed, but the witness must still be in the room and attest the signature. A video-call witness is not what that report describes.
Can a will be signed with an e-signature tool?
No, not as the general route in England and Wales. Wills Act 1837, s.9, requires the testator's signature to be made or acknowledged in the presence of two witnesses present at the same time, who each attest and sign. That is a wet-ink formality.
Can I use DocuSign for a Land Registry transfer?
Not as a generic upload. Registrable dispositions follow HM Land Registry's own processes. Practice Guide 8 covers execution of deeds. Practice Guide 82 covers electronic signatures the Registry accepts. Use those processes, not a general e-sign envelope.
What is the best free e-signature tool for a UK small business?
Dropbox Sign's free plan allows 3 signature requests a month. Zoho Sign's Free plan allows 5 envelopes a month for one user. Yousign/Youtrust Free is €0 with 2 requests a month plus unlimited self-sign. Contracts.io Free is £0 for 3 active contracts, and the other side can negotiate before they sign.
Is DocuSign worth it for a UK small business?
Yes, if the document is already written and you only need it signed. UK Personal is £96 billed annually for 5 envelopes a month. If you still need to agree the words, a two-sided room is the missing piece, and you can send the frozen file to DocuSign afterwards if a counterparty requires it.
Does the client need an account to sign?
On DocuSign, Dropbox Sign, Zoho Sign and Contracts.io, recipients sign without paying for a seat. On Contracts.io they can also negotiate the wording on the same link before they sign, with no account.
