What is a offer letter?

An offer letter tells a candidate the main terms of a job you are offering: title, manager, salary, start date, hours, location and any conditions such as references or right-to-work checks. It is often followed by a fuller employment contract. Employment law is detailed and varies a lot by place, and some terms must be given to employees in writing in some jurisdictions, so an offer letter is usually reviewed against local rules before it is sent.

Also called: offer of employment, job offer letter, offer letter, employment offer letter.

What are you deciding in a offer letter?

  • Job title, manager and start date
  • Salary, pay frequency and benefits
  • Hours and place of work
  • Conditions of the offer (references, checks)
  • Whether this letter is the contract, or a fuller contract follows

Frequently asked questions

Is there a offer letter file to download?

No, there is no blank Word or PDF file. You describe the deal in a sentence, Lex drafts the offer letter with your details already in it, and you share one link. The other side reads it in Plain English, suggests changes and signs in the browser, free.

Is an offer letter legally binding?

Once accepted, an unconditional offer can form a contract in many places. Conditional offers usually become binding when the conditions are met. Local employment law decides the details.

What is the difference between an offer letter and an employment contract?

An offer letter summarises the key terms to secure a hire. An employment contract sets out the full terms. In some places, certain terms must be given in writing by a set date.

Can an offer be withdrawn?

Before acceptance, usually yes. After acceptance, withdrawing may be a breach of contract unless a condition was not met. This is an area where local advice matters.
