Tutoring agreement

The paper between a tutor and a student, or a student's parent. It records the schedule and the rate, but the section that decides whether the arrangement works is cancellation: how much notice is required, what a missed lesson costs, and whether it can be rearranged. Where the student is a child, it also names the responsible adult, where lessons happen, and any checks or safeguarding arrangements the tutor holds.

What you are deciding

Blanks you leave stay blank and wait in the room. Nothing is filled in from a guess.

The sections a draft usually has

  1. 1The parties and the student
  2. 2Subject and objectives
  3. 3Schedule
  4. 4Fees and payment
  5. 5Cancellation and rescheduling
  6. 6Location and attendance
  7. 7Materials
  8. 8Safeguarding, where a child is taught
  9. 9Ending the arrangement

A general outline, not a required one. What turns up in a draft follows what you described. A contract is written in the order a contract is read.

What people call it

The names this kind of paper goes by. They are here because people search for them. They also filter the catalogue. They are not a wordlist the door matches. At the composer you describe the deal in your own words instead.

Questions people ask

How much cancellation notice is usual?
It is a commercial choice recorded in the paper, commonly set so that a tutor holding a slot is not left unpaid at short notice. There is no legal standard.
Should lessons be paid in blocks?
Many tutors do it that way for predictability. Where blocks are used, papers of this kind say what happens to unused lessons and whether they expire.
What extra applies when the student is a child?
Local rules on working with children may require checks, and agreements of this kind usually name the responsible adult and where lessons take place. The requirements come from local law rather than from the contract.

Where it lives

A contract names the legal system it is governed by. That is a separate decision from which paper it is. You pick it at the door, from any of the 184 units in Governing law, including England and Wales, Delaware, California and New York.

You do not start from this page. Describe the deal in one sentence at the door. Read the draft back in plain language, in the order a contract is read.
