Coaching agreement

The paper for a coaching engagement, whether business, career, life or physical training. Alongside the sessions, the fee and the cancellation rule, it usually carries a section other service papers do not: a plain statement of what the coaching is and is not — not therapy, not medical treatment, not financial or legal advice — and where the client should go for those instead. Confidentiality tends to run one way, protecting what the client says.

What you are deciding

Blanks you leave stay blank and wait in the room. Nothing is filled in from a guess.

The sections a draft usually has

  1. 1The parties
  2. 2The coaching programme
  3. 3Sessions and delivery
  4. 4Fees and payment
  5. 5Cancellation and rescheduling
  6. 6Confidentiality
  7. 7Scope: what coaching is not
  8. 8Reporting to a paying employer
  9. 9Ending the engagement

A general outline, not a required one. What turns up in a draft follows what you described. A contract is written in the order a contract is read.

What people call it

The names this kind of paper goes by. They are here because people search for them. They also filter the catalogue. They are not a wordlist the door matches. At the composer you describe the deal in your own words instead.

Questions people ask

Why does a coaching agreement say what it is not?
Because coaching sits near regulated fields such as therapy, medicine and financial advice. Papers of this kind state the boundary plainly and point the client elsewhere for those.
Who owns what is said in a session?
Confidentiality in these agreements usually protects the client's disclosures. Where an employer is paying, the paper says what, if anything, is reported back.
Are results usually promised?
Agreements of this kind describe the process rather than the outcome, because outcomes depend on the client. Promising results is both hard to define and hard to stand behind.

Where it lives

A contract names the legal system it is governed by. That is a separate decision from which paper it is. You pick it at the door, from any of the 184 units in Governing law, including England and Wales, Delaware, California and New York.

You do not start from this page. Describe the deal in one sentence at the door. Read the draft back in plain language, in the order a contract is read.
